The Many Uses of Elastic Thread in Sewing Projects

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced seamstress, understanding how to use elastic threads in your projects can open up a world of possibilities. Elastic threads allow you to create clothes and accessories that are both functional and stylish. They also give you a wider range of options to be creative with your projects.

Items sewn with elastic thread can withstand stress and wear, moving and stretching along the fabric instead of fighting against it. Let’s look at the various applications of elastic threads in the textile industry.

Shirring

One of the most popular uses of elastic thread is found in shirring, a sewing technique that creates stretchy, gathered fabric to emphasize the body’s silhouette. Elastic threads are used for summer dresses, tops, and skirts to add texture and elasticity. Shirring is achieved by sewing rows of stitching using elastic thread in the bobbin (lower part of the sewing machine). The elastic will end up on the underside of the fabric, gathering them close together to create a closer texture with an adjustable, stretchy fit.

Elastic Threads in Waistbands and Cuffs

Thanks to its stretchy nature, elastic threads are great for stretchy waistbands, cuffs, and hems in pants, skirts, and sleeves. Since they can morph back into their original shapes, elastic threads can make garments stay securely in place without being too tight or uncomfortable. This feature is great for children’s clothing, pajamas, and loungewear, where comfort and flexibility are essential.

Smocking

Similar to shirring, smocking is a sewing technique that uses elastic threads to create tight pleats across a section of fabric. Modern smocking incorporates elastic threads to create bodices, sleeves, or necklines with interesting textures and ornamental patterns.

Swimwear and Activewear

When one is out and about, wearing something fitted and comfortable is a must. Aside from making exercising or swimming more enjoyable, a snug fit will also rid our minds of possible accidents while in motion. Elastic threads allow swimwear and activewear to achieve those goals. Elastic threads hold the fabric together tightly while allowing necessary movement and stretch. Thus, you can easily find elastic threads in waistbands, leg openings, and seams of these garments.

Costume Design

Costume design often requires a combination of structure and stretch, making elastic threads a great choice for costumes that need to fit snugly while allowing movement. They are commonly used in theatrical costumes, cosplay outfits, and dancewear.
